Learning through movement, technology, and with a smile on the face significantly accelerates learning mathematics

Children often perceive mathematics as a sedentary task, a set of exercises with paper and pencil.

But it can be different. Lin and Wang’s 2022 study (Link to the study) shows that movement technologies can be not only a fun addition but also an effective tool for accelerating the learning process. Mathematics combined with movement transforms a lesson into an exciting adventure where children learn with both their minds and bodies.

Lin and Wang used Kinect motion sensor technology to create interactive math games for children aged 5–7. In these games, children performed physical movements to select the correct numbers, arrange digits in sequence, and solve simple arithmetic problems while moving around the room. By using movement, children “touched” digital objects on the screen and completed tasks synchronized with their bodily actions.

Such activities engage not only vision and hearing but also kinesthetic memory — meaning that the child “learns with the whole body.”

As a result, the children:

  • Developed a faster understanding of number concepts and mathematical operations;
  • Were more active, focused, and positive;
  • Became more motivated, interested, and gained positive emotional engagement in the learning process;
  • Achieved more durable memory and retained knowledge longer.

This approach is based on learning through sensory and movement integration (embodied learning) — learning becomes more effective when it involves physical activity. Movement stimulates multiple areas of the brain simultaneously, making mathematical concepts more “tangible” and easier to grasp.
