About Us

MatMat was created in Latvia by a family company ACR4edu, in close collaboration with researchers, educators, and child development specialists, as well as in cooperation with the RTU Vidzemes Innovation and Lifelong Learning Centre.

Our goal was to develop a learning tool that is not just a game or an app, but a dynamic and inspiring educational platform where children can learn mathematics with joy.

This idea is based on a modern adaptive learning approach that adjusts to each child’s pace, abilities, and interests. Mistakes are not seen as failures – they are a natural and necessary part of the learning process. In this way, children not only practice calculating but also learn to think boldly and feel confident on their educational journey.

How was MatMat created?

We wanted children to be joyful, move physically, not be afraid of making mistakes, and practice mental math, which is the foundation of mathematics.

That’s why the “smart cells” are designed as modular units that can be customized, rearranged, and used in various games and activities.

MatMat consists of:

13 connectable smart cells that form a modular sensor number mat;
A mental math app that adapts tasks and tracks movements.

Children jump, select answers, and simultaneously train concentration, memory, social skills, and, of course, mathematics.

Science as inspiration

Deeply inspired us by the work of Dr. John J. Ratey, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School, particularly his book Spark, in which he writes: “Did you know that you can reduce stress, improve your mood, fight memory loss, boost focus and mental performance — simply by getting your heart rate up and breaking a sweat?”

This scientific insight became the foundation for our innovative product, MatMat – a technology that combines movement with mathematics learning, promoting both physical and mental development.

The MatMat graphic trademark is officially registered in the European Union (Reg. No. 019171214).

This certificate confirms the uniqueness and originality of our developed technology and visual identity.

MatMat is not only an educational product created in Latvia, but also fully recognized at the European level as an innovative learning technology for children.

Our Path to Innovation

MatMat’s journey began with a research idea that emerged at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, as part of the postdoctoral research project “Artificial Intelligence Support for Accelerated Mathematics Learning Approaches.” This initiative laid the foundation for an innovative learning approach, combining mathematics education with movement, digital technologies, and the possibilities offered by artificial intelligence.

The first steps in development were supported by the Latvian Investment and Development Agency (LIAA) pre-incubation program, where the initial idea was developed, and the potential user base was identified.

Further growth and product development were significantly supported through participation in the LIAA Valmieras Business Incubator, where assistance was received for refining the product, testing the solution, and preparing it for a broader market.

Today, MatMat is an interdisciplinary educational technology, based not only on technological innovation but also on scientific grounding and practical application in the field of education.
